The Happiest Countries in the World During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Gealena – The Happiest Countries in the World. Apart from the challenges and uncertainties created by the Covid-19 pandemic over the past year, Finland has retained its status as the happiest country in the world.
According to the World Happiness Report 2021 released on Friday 19 March 2021, among the 10 Happiest Countries in the World, 9 are countries in Europe. Finland occupied the first rank. Then followed by Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, New Iceland, and Austria.
“We find year after year that life satisfaction is reported to be the happiest in social democracies in northern Europe. People feel safe in those countries, so the level of trust is high. The government is seen as credible and honest. Trust in each other is also high, “said one of the report authors Jeffrey Sachs told The Associated Press, as quoted by Fox News.
This year’s report was produced by the United Nations Sustainable Solutions Network and ranks 149 countries based on gross domestic product per person, healthy life expectancy, and population opinions.
The ranking of the happiest countries in the world is also obtained from the results of a survey of respondents. They were asked to indicate on a scale of 1-10 how much social support they would feel if something went wrong. Their freedom to make their own life choices. Their feelings about how corrupt their society is and how good they are.
According to the press release, the report usually includes data from the previous three years’ survey in order to increase the sample size and keep the confidence threshold smaller.
But this year, analysts also created a separate list of the Happiest Countries in the World based solely on results from 2020 to see how the country was doing during the pandemic, apart from previous years.
Finland Tops the List
Finland also tops the list of the Happiest Countries in the World, followed by Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Norway, New Zealand, and Austria.
In the press report, the report’s authors argued that the most important factors for happiness were people’s trust in each other and trust in their government.
“We need to quickly learn from Covid-19. The pandemic reminds us of the threat to our global environment, the urgent need to work together, and the difficulties of achieving cooperation in every country and globally,” Sachs said in a statement.
“The World Happiness Report 2021 reminds us that we should aim for prosperity rather than wealth, which will indeed be fleeting if we don’t do a much better job of tackling the challenges of sustainable development,” he added.
Meanwhile, the United States ranks as the 14th Happiest Country in the World out of a total of 150 countries. In the report on the happiest country 2021.
