The World’s First Space Hotel will be Operated in 2027

Gealena – First Space Hotel Will be Operational. In 2019, the California company Gateway Foundation released plans for a cruise ship-style hotel that could one day float above Earth’s atmosphere.

Named the Von Braun Station, this futuristic concept – consisting of 24 modules connected by an elevator shaft that forms a rotating wheel orbiting Earth – is scheduled to be fully operational by 2027.

A few years later the name of the hotel was changed to Voyager Station – and will be built by the Orbital Assembly Corporation, a new construction company run by former pilot John Blincow, who also heads the Gateway Foundation.

First Space Hotel Will be Operational

In a recent interview with CNN Travel, Blincow said there were delays due to Covid-19, but the construction of a space hotel is expected to start in 2026, and a stopover in space could become a reality by 2027.

“We are trying to make the public realize that this golden age of space travel is coming,” Blincow said, quoted by CNN, Monday (8/3).

The hotel design may not be much different from the luxury hotels on Earth.

When the initial designs came out a few years ago, Tim Alatorre, senior design architect at the Orbital Assembly Corporation told CNN Travel the hotel aesthetic was a direct response to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

“I think Stanley Kubrick’s goal is to highlight the gap between technology and humanity and so, on purpose, he’s making stations and planes very sterile, clean, and foreign.”

Instead, Alatorre and his team want to adopt the atmosphere of the earth to outer space through warm rooms and bars, and restaurants. Guests may be in outer space, but they can still enjoy the usual bed and bathroom.

There are also plans to serve traditional “space food” – such as freeze-dried ice cream – at the hotel restaurant.

In addition, there are also recreational activities on offer which Alatorre says “You can do things that you cannot do on Earth.”

“Because of its lightweight and reduced gravity, you’ll be able to jump higher, be able to lift objects, be able to run in ways you can’t on Earth,” he explained.

How does a space hotel work?

Alatorre explained the rotating wheel will work to create a simulation of gravity.

“The station rotates, pushing station contents out around the station like you can turn a bucket of water – the water pushes out into the bucket and stays in place,” he explained.

Near the center of the station there is no artificial gravity, but as you move outside the station, the feeling of gravity increases.

Space tourism is a hot topic, and there are several companies trying to make it happen – from Virgin Galactic to Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

SpaceX’s StarShip system can help launch the Voyager Station.

“We cannot call SpaceX our partner, but in the future, we look forward to working with them,” explained Blincow.

First Space Hotel Will be Operational, How much is a space hotel?

For now, the space hotel does not advertise room rates but is expected to be high.

Virgin Galactic, for example, plans to launch passengers into sub-orbital space at a price of USD 250,000 per person, per trip.

But the team behind Voyager Station says they hope that ultimately staying at the hotel is the equivalent of a “cruise ship trip or a trip to Disneyland.”

The team also hopes to build a research station and spark tourism and space trade opportunities.

“We’re designing tools and machines right now that can build these structures very quickly,” explains Blincow.

The team envisions a public or private company could use the module to train crews “to Mars, the Moon and beyond,” as Alatorre outlined in 2021.

The next stage for starting Voyager Station is to bring in more investors and continue testing in the field.

The end goal, as Alatorre said in 2019, is “to create a spaceship culture where people go to space, and live in space, and work in space and they want to be in space. And we believe that there is a demand for it. “
